This week saw
BT Sport score a significant victory in their new battle for supremacy against
Sky Sports and their Premier League monopoly.
The two
broadcasters confirmed the fixtures they will be showing over the festive
period and the feeling is that BT have managed to scoop some major fixtures for
fans of the channel.
This season,
they have 18 first pick games and although this wasn’t totally utilised to
start with, it has been now.
BT will show
the potential top of the table showdown between Manchester City and Arsenal on
14 December. No doubt we will see one of their main pundits, David James
promote it as ‘The Big Spenders versus
The Young Guns!’
Ex-BBC
presenter Jake Humphrey will also be busy fronting a double bill of games on
both Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. A day after that large Christmas dinner,
settle back to watch an intriguing London derby between West Ham United and
Arsenal on BT, followed by Manchester City v Liverpool. On the first day of
2014, the second meeting between Manchester United and Tottenham for the season
will be shown directly after a tricky test for Chelsea away to high-flying
Southampton.
For once, Sky
Sports have been put in the shade although they do have some big matches of
their own. Sky has won the rights to Chelsea v Liverpool, now moved to Sunday,
29 December and has therefore become the final Premier League fixture of the
calendar year. Also included in their festive line-up is Arsenal v Chelsea on
23 December as a Monday Night Football clash (pundits pictured with host Ed Chamberlin) and some New Year’s Day treats
involving Swansea City and Manchester City.
