Former
Premier League footballers Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher conducted the draw
for the second round of the Capital One Cup (inflatable pictured) on Thursday lunchtime and gave
several of the round one giantkillers a chance to upset the odds again.
14 Premier
League sides enter this stage and League Two outfit Morecambe were probably the
side that got the plum tie. They will
welcome Newcastle United to the Globe Arena in three weeks’ time.
Morecambe claimed the scalp of Blackpool in last season’s first round and upset Wolves at
the same stage on Tuesday night. A
brilliant free-kick from Ryan Williams helped them to a 1-0 victory infront of
the Sky Sports cameras. They will fancy
their chances again in a game which will show a test of the questionable team
spirit at Newcastle.
Another side
who caused a big upset this week were Newport County. After waiting 25 years for a League Cup tie,
the Welsh club came from a goal down to defeat Championship side Brighton 3-1
after extra-time. The reward for Justin
Edinburgh’s side is a trip to the Hawthorns to take on Steve Clarke’s West
Brom.
After missing
out on Europe for the second time in three seasons, 2012 winners Liverpool return
to the second round and drew Notts County at Anfield. Football’s oldest club in England can take
heart from the Reds shock early exit at home to Northampton Town in 2010, and
manager Chris Kiwomya will have happy memories of visiting Merseyside. He was part of the Ipswich Town squad that
pulled off a shock 1-0 win at Liverpool in January 1995.
Accrington
Stanley recorded one of the biggest wins of their recent history in midweek,
when they defeated 2004 winners Middlesbrough at the Riverside. James Beattie will enjoy facing up to newly
promoted Premier League side Cardiff City in the second round.
Other
interesting ties see Southampton head to Oakwell to face Barnsley, two tasty
Football League local derbies between Doncaster Rovers and Leeds United in
Yorkshire, whilst Burnley entertain Preston North End in Lancashire and Fulham
face a tough assignment at the Pirelli Stadium against one of the bookies
favourites for promotion from League Two this season in Burton Albion.
All ties will
be played on the week beginning 26 August 2013
