The Daily Mirror has revealed Mark Hughes is edging closer to returning to football management with Stoke City.
The Potters made an approach late last week, and it is understood more weekend negotiations between the two parties mean his appointment at the Britannia Stadium is all but a formality.
In fact, the former Manchester United striker (pictured) is hopeful of getting the deal sealed by the end of the week.
Stoke relieved Tony Pulis of his duties last week after seven years at the club, and it looks like his countryman will succeed him.
Hughes’s miserable stint in charge of QPR, which ended last November, has damaged his managerial reputation and made him an unpopular choice with many Stoke fans.
However, he impressed in his four years with Blackburn, and guided Fulham to a top eight finish in his only season in charge at Craven Cottage in 2011.
The Welshman will bring long-serving assistants Eddie Niedzwiecki and Mark Bowen with him to the club.
