The Guardian reports Newcastle have identified Liverpool’s young midfielder Jay Spearing as a potential summer target.
Spearing had a prominent run in the first team on Merseyside under Kenny Dalglish last season, and won the Carling Cup, but was deemed surplus to requirements by Brendan Rodgers this campaign.
The 24-year-old (pictured) has spent the season at Championship side Bolton Wanderers, and has impressed with some consistent performances that have won him awards from two different Trotters supporters’ groups.
He has scored twice in 39 games for Dougie Freedman’s men, although a broken toe ruled him out of today's final set of Championship fixtures.
Victory over Blackpool would have confirmed a play-off spot for the Lancastrians, and that could have meant Spearing might have another trip to Wembley, but the 2-2 draw saw Leicester City snatch the final play-off spot.
With one more year left on his current deal, he might have to leave Liverpool permanently to keep getting first team opportunities.
Newcastle have been short of cover in midfield this season, with Vurnon Anita and Yohan Cabaye being injured, and James Perch having to deputise.
