Steven Gerrard’s season has been brought to a premature end by a shoulder operation, according to the Daily Express.
The Liverpool skipper had been planning to have the surgery at the end of the current campaign, but with the Reds unlikely to improve on their current Premier League position of seventh, the treatment will be brought forward to ensure he is fit for pre-season training in July.
The England captain (pictured) will be sidelined for upto eight weeks, consequently missing the club’s final two Premier League fixtures against Fulham and QPR, along with two England friendly dates with the Republic of Ireland and Brazil.
Gerrard had started every single game for the Merseysiders this season, notching his 36th consecutive appearance at the weekend in a stale goalless draw with Everton at Anfield.
He is the second midfielder to have a season cut short by shoulder issues for Liverpool. Joe Allen’s debut season at the club was ended by a similar problem at the end of March.
