The Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli has been appointed to the biggest club game in the world, the Champions League final, confirms Goal.com.
UEFA has announced the Bologna-born official will take charge of this Saturday’s showpiece at Wembley between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
The 41-year-old (pictured) has been a Serie A referee for 11 years, and has shown five red cards and 83 yellow cards in his 17 matches this season.
He was appointed to the UEFA list in 2007, and has taken charge of five Champions League encounters this season. His most recent appointment was for Malaga’s 2-0 victory over Porto in the last 16 back in March.
Rizzoli’s assistants will be compatriots Renato Faverani, Andrea Stefani, Paolo Tagliavento and Gianluca Rocchi. Damir Skomina from Slovenia will be fourth official in London.
Finals are nothing new for Rizzoli. He was in the centre circle for the UEFA Europa League final between Atletico Madrid and Fulham in 2010.
He also took charge of England’s opening group game at Euro 2012 against France.
