Stoke manager Tony Pulis has told Eurosport of his praise for striker Michael Owen.
The former goal king has struggled with injuries in the second half of his career, and announced his retirement from football in March.
The 33-year-old (pictured) made his final appearance on Sunday, making a brief cameo from the bench in the Potters 1-1 draw with Southampton.
He was given a standing ovation by the whole crowd at St Mary’s, and despite not making as much of an impact as he would have liked since joining from Manchester United in September, Pulis has admitted that it was a privilege to work with the ex-England striker.
Pulis said: “It was always the plan to bring him on. He had a great chance in the second half to actually put the icing on the cake. If he had scored, I think even the Southampton supporters would have given him a round of applause.
“He got a great reception and he deserves it. He has been a very, very good pro for us and, not just his football side; he is a very, very good family man.”
Owen made his Premier League debut for Liverpool in May 1997, and scored within a quarter of an hour of his emergence away at Wimbledon.
He won the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup with the Reds in 2001, and went on to feature for Real Madrid, Newcastle United and Manchester United in his club career, scoring in total 163 league goals.
