American sportswear giant Nike have bounced back from losing their contract with Arsenal, by signing a £72m kit deal with Manchester City (kits pictured), says Football365.com.
The deal was announced on Tuesday at a media event in New York, where the club are on a post-season tour, before two friendlies in St. Louis and New York with Chelsea.
The 2012 Premier League champions announced last year that there were going to move away from former suppliers Umbro, who were previously owned by Nike.
The club’s commercial and operating officer Tom Glick said: “We are delighted to join forces with Nike. Having them as our new technical kit partner demonstrates City’s growing global appeal, and we look forward to working alongside Nike to build and engage our fanbase around the world.”
“Nike’s extensive distribution networks will ensure the club’s presence in markets stretching from Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas and that our fans everywhere can find and wear a City shirt.”
It was a busy day of deals off-the-field, as the Citizens also confirmed they had acquired the rights to the MLS’s 20th expansion franchise from 2015 in a global partnership with the New York Yankees.
Nike will pay City £12m a year to wear their kit for the next six years. Senior figures at the club believe this will help tie in with Nike’s more familiar partnerships, which include the Brazil national team, Barcelona and Manchester United.
