In-demand manager Roberto Martinez has delayed making a decision on his future after holding talks today with his chairman at Wigan Athletic Dave Whelan.
According to Sky Sports, Whelan is still keen to hold onto his Spanish manager, despite their eight-year stay in the top flight ending last week with defeat at Arsenal.
Under Martinez (pictured), Wigan earned a spot in Europe through their FA Cup triumph at Wembley against Manchester City, and despite the crushing blow of relegation, the players and the manager paraded the cup around Wigan earlier this week in an open-top bus.
On Monday, Martinez told Sky Sports News: “Over the next week we’ll sit down with the chairman and we’ll decide, but it’s just a time to be proud of the achievement of the last eight years at this level, making sure we can bounce back.
“But the football club financially and in terms of history, we’re ready to break even more ground, playing in the Europa League in the group stages, and carry on making that belief and pride of Wigan very strong.”
The Spaniard has turned down Aston Villa in the last two seasons, and was a serious candidate for the Liverpool vacancy last summer until the post went to Brendan Rodgers.
Martinez, who first played for Wigan in 1995 and returned as manager of the club in 2009, has been heavily linked with the Malaga job with Manuel Pellegrini leaving his post, and also the vacancy at Everton, where David Moyes has stepped down to succeed the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
