Swansea City manager Michael Laudrup has been speaking to Yahoo about his choice for player of the year.
The awards were cleaned up last month by Tottenham’s Gareth Bale, who scored 31 goals in the season for club and country. Along with the Welsh winger, Laudrup feels Robin van Persie was key in helping Manchester United to a 13th Premier League title in Sir Alex Ferguson’s swansong.
The Dutchman finished as the winner of the Golden Boot for the second season running, scoring 26 goals.
He joins an elite group of Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry to win the Golden Boot in back-to-back seasons.
Both of these players achieved the feat three times in a row at the prime of their careers.
Laudrup (pictured) said: “It’s always very difficult because it depends how you judge it. Do you look at the player who has had an influence on the team winning a title, or do you look at a player who has been outstanding individually even if his club hasn’t won anything?
“I think Gareth Bale has been outstanding but Van Persie has also been fantastic and very important for Manchester United’s title win.”
Van Persie also won the BBC Match of the Day Goal of the Season, after pundits Shearer and Alan Hansen unanimously agreed on his volley against Aston Villa in April, beating a couple of Bale’s special efforts.
Swansea finished ninth, despite winning only one game since League Cup glory in February.
