One of Borussia Dortmund’s star players has been ruled out of the Champions League final with a hamstring injury.

BBC Sport confirms the player in question is 20-year-old starlet Mario Gotze, who hasn’t recovered in time for the Wembley showpiece against his future employers Bayern Munich.

Gotze (pictured) will move to the Bavarians on 1 July, after the new Bundesliga champions activated his release clause in his Dortmund contract at £31.5m last month.

The youngster said: “The final was my big goal and I have battled hard for it.  I am unbelievably sorry that I will not be able to help the team in this match.”

Gotze has not figured for Dortmund since he injured his thigh in the opening 15 minutes of the semi-final, second leg against Real Madrid, which will turn out to be his final appearance for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

He will leave the club having found the target 31 times in 116 appearances since making his first-team debut in 2009.

He was also part of the national side that reached the semi-finals at Euro 2012, and has already amassed 22 full international caps.

When his transfer officially goes through, Gotze will become the most expensive German footballer of all-time.
