England manager Roy Hodgson has hit out at Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham for arranging post-season tours after the domestic season has finished.
England have two friendlies to play in the next fortnight against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley, before travelling to Rio to face 2014 World Cup hosts Brazil for the second time in the calendar year.
The FA brought the dates of these friendlies forward to allow players to have an extended summer break.
However, the lucrative tours of the three domestic clubs have hampered Hodgson’s build-up to the final games of this particular season.
Hodgson (pictured) said: “We’ve been scotched a little bit by the three teams who decided to go on long close-season tours.
“It’s made the first match in particular a bit difficult because some of the players will only have been back a few days when we’ve got to play. We’re also scotched in that the teams have decided to go west to America and Bahamas so they’re going back and forth on these long journeys.”
The Independent says all of the England players called up to the squad who play for these clubs will return before the Republic game.
Tottenham’s tour ends tomorrow, with Jermain Defoe and Kyle Walker representing England next week.
Chelsea have indicated Gary Cahill, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole have returned ahead of schedule today, but Joe Hart, James Milner and Joleon Lescott are staying with Manchester City until the weekend concludes.
