David Gill will join UEFA’s executive committee in his first main role since stepping down from his duties at Manchester United.
Gill (pictured) announced in February that he was relinquishing his role as chief executive at Old Trafford, going at the same time as manager Sir Alex Ferguson, with assistant manager Mike Phelan also announced recently to be leaving the club.
The Daily Telegraph is saying Gill has won his place on the committee unopposed. The only other serious contender, Fernando Gomes from Portugal, has withdrawn his candidacy.
He will join the 25-strong executive committee, replacing the FA’s vice-president Geoff Thompson to ensure England still has strong links at the top of the European game until 2017.
Gill is also considering making a run for a place on the FIFA Exco in 2015.
He attended a UEFA congress meeting, with UEFA president Michel Platini using his speech to renew his call for corruption, doping and match-fixing in football to be tackled harder by a European sports police force.
