Sunderland manager Paolo di Canio has lashed out at two of his defenders after they were caught in some late night antics as full-back Phil Bardsley (pictured) and central defender Matthew Kilgallon were picture covered in a heap of £50 notes in a casino after the Black Cats’ Premier League safety was guaranteed following Wigan’s relegation last Tuesday.
Neither player was considered for the Wearsiders’ final match of the season, ending in a 1-0 defeat at Tottenham which completes their worst top flight campaign since returning to the Premier League in 2007.
After the match at White Hart Lane, Di Canio spoke to Sky Sports and admitted his disappointment at seeing the pictures.
He said: “I saw the picture on a website and moments later he (Bardsley) was out of my squad. How can I play a player that probably is blurry for three, four days after what’s happened?
“I want to deliver a very clear message: there is no excuse to behave like he did. They went out because Wigan lost the game and we stay up.
“I thought that at Swindon…arrogant, ignorant footballers because they’ve not had many chances to stay at the top level. I have to tell you unfortunately I found a worse environment in terms of discipline in this club.”
Di Canio did admit he would probably give former Manchester United player Bardsley a second chance, but Kilgallon’s future looks more uncertain.
Bardsley has featured regularly for Di Canio since the Italian became manager at the start of April. He had scored his first goal for almost two years last week in the draw with Southampton.
