Premier League 2015/2016 - Some of the best stats

The 24th Premier League season has now reached its conclusion. The most unpredictable campaign in modern teams produced an amazing final result, with the incredible Leicester City being crowned champions. The Foxes finished 10 points clear of nearest challengers, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

As with every season, some statistics come out that can surprise people - so here are some facts and stats about the 2015/2016 Premier League campaign.

1 PL point only collected by Aston Villa from 14 February to 15 May 2016.

Only 1 team failed to beat Aston Villa in the PL this season – Newcastle United.

1st time in PL history Manchester United conceded three goals in opening 20 minutes of a match when Arsenal blitzed them in October 2015.

1st time in PL history that the first goal scored in the season was an own goal (Kyle Walker) and the last goal scored was also an OG (Chris Smalling).

2 penalties were saved by Heurelho Gomes in the same game from the same player (Saido Berahino) vs West Bromwich Albion.

Arsenal were one of only two teams to beat Leicester City in 2015/2016
2 teams only beat Leicester City this season – Arsenal (pictured) (twice) and Liverpool FC (once).

Crystal Palace won only games  in the PL after 19 December 2015.

2 seasons now since Jesus Navas (Manchester City) last scored a PL goal. He has managed 76 shots since his last goal in the competition vs Cardiff City in January 2014.

3 games won all season by Aston Villa – their lowest-ever win return in PL history.

3 times Victor Wanyama was sent off this season in the PL – only the seventh player in PL history with this unfortunate feat.

Manchester City spent only 3 days outside the top four all season.

3 penalties Carl Jenkinson conceded this season – the highest of any player this term.

Chelsea took maximum points from only 3 teams this season – relegated Norwich City and Aston Villa + Arsenal.

This was the 3rd successive season Stoke City finished the season in 9th position.

Norwich City have now been relegated 4 times in PL history – a joint-high with Crystal Palace.

5 players have now scored 50 PL goals before the age of 23. Romelu Lukaku achieved this landmark in November 2015.

6 PL games Tottenham Hotspur lost this season – their lowest-ever loss return in any previous PL season.

Relegated Newcastle United took 6 points off Tottenham Hotspur in the 2015/2016 season.

7 penalties Jamie Vardy won on his own this season – more than 17 of the 20 PL clubs this season.

Manchester City achieved only 7 points against this season’s final top eight.

8th equalled Liverpool FC’s lowest-ever PL finish – previously matched in 1993/1994 and 2011/2012.

9 games were lost by Chelsea before Jose Mourinho was sacked in December.

9 goals were scored at Carrow Road between Norwich City and Liverpool FC in January – the highest-scoring game of the season.

9 Tottenham Hotspur players were booked in the ‘Battle of Stamford Bridge.’

10 points was Leicester’s winning margin. Only three teams in PL history have won the league by a bigger distance.

10 defeats for Manchester City this season was their highest loss return since losing 18 games in 2008/2009.

10 shots on target was all Leonardo Ulloa managed this season. He still scored six vital goals though for champions Leicester City.

Chelsea's 10th-placed finish is the the lowest from a defending Premier League champion.

11 games in a row Jamie Vardy scored in – a new Premier League record.

11 games in a row Aston Villa lost between February and April – an unwanted club record equalled.

11 goals were scored by Georginio Wijnaldum this season for Newcastle United – all of them at St James’ Park.

Chelsea went 15 games unbeaten between mid-December and early April. That was the longest sequence undefeated of the season.

15-goal return from Jermain Defoe was his second-best goalscoring return from any PL campaign he has featured in.

15 games unbeaten West Ham United managed at Upton Park between September & May.

17 points from Aston Villa is the third lowest tally ever achieved in PL history.

18 goals from Romelu Lukaku this season is a new high for an Everton player in any PL season previously.

18 years, 120 days – Marcus Rashford’s age when he scored his first PL goals against Arsenal in February 2016.

18 years, 141 days – Marcus Rashford became the youngest player to ever score in a PL Manchester Derby.

19 goals Dele Alli was involved with in his debut PL campaign.

19 assists from Mesut Ozil this season is only 1 less than the PL record (Thierry Henry – 20 in 2003/2004).

20 points were dropped by Tottenham Hotspur this season from winning positions.

21 seasons in a row Arsenal have finished above Tottenham Hotspur in the final table.

21 years have passed since not all fixtures were played simultaneously on the final day. Wimbledon vs Nottingham Forest was the last time this happened in May 1995.

Everton amassed only 23 points this season at Goodison Park – a new PL low for the club.

There was less than 24 hours between the first two PL managerial departures of the season (Dick Advocaat resigned at Sunderland and Brendan Rodgers was sacked by Liverpool FC on 4th October)

25 goals was enough for Harry Kane to win his first Golden Boot.

25 goals now in his Swansea City PL career makes Gylfi Sigurdsson the club’s joint all-time PL top goalscorer (level with Wilfried Bony)

25 direct free-kicks were scored this season – the lowest in the last eight PL seasons.

Sergio Aguero has scored now against 27 opponents in his PL career. He has played against 29 different clubs.

29 years, 197 days – West Bromwich Albion had the oldest starting XI on average this season.

34 players were used by Liverpool FC during their 2015/2016 Premier League campaign.

35 shots from Watford’s Etienne Capoue was the most this season by any player who failed to score in the PL.

38 own goals were scored in the 2015/2016 PL season.

42.4% was Leicester City’s average possession figure in 2015/2016.

43% of Cesc Fabregas’ assists this season came in one match vs AFC Bournemouth in April 2016.

45 points is a new PL high for Watford and they avoided relegation for the first time in their PL history.

45.45% was the best shot conversion of the season – Callum Wilson (AFC Bournemouth).

Liverpool FC have now won at 50 away grounds in PL history after beating AFC Bournemouth in April 2016.

Chelsea’s 50 points is the lowest return for a defending champion side since Everton in 1970/1971.

51 more goals were scored in 2015/2016 in comparison to the final total in 2014/2015 (975).

52.5% of PL goals in 2015/2016 were scored by players using their right foot.

61.5% was Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal return from shots on target. (8 goals scored from 13 efforts on target).

62 points for West Ham United is their best-ever PL total at the end of any season.

66-1 were the best odds given by bookmakers on Garry Monk’s sacking at the start of the season. He was dismissed by Swansea City in December 2015.

The 70 points achieved by Tottenham Hotspur is actually two lower than their best PL season total, set in 2012/2013 when they finished fifth under Andre Villas-Boas.

74 penalties were scored in the 2015/2016 PL season.

95 different nationalities have now scored in PL history. Gambia becoming the newest after Modou Barrow’s strike against AFC Bournemouth in March 2016.

100 PL goals for Sergio Aguero – achieved in just 147 games for Manchester City.

178 PL clean sheets now for Petr Cech – a new PL record.

There were 180 headed goals in the PL season of 2015/2016.

243 minutes of Premier League football Aston Villa led in games this season – a new PL low.

340 minutes Wes Morgan played in 2015/2016 – only the third player from any PL title-winning side to play every single minute of football.

715 goals in the 2015/2016 PL this season came from open play.

1026 goals were scored in the PL in 2015/2016.

1985/1986 was the last campaign before this one that West Ham United finished with a positive goal difference.

1996 was the last time Chelsea finished outside the top eight.  They finished 11th in that season.

1999 – Jonathan Leko (West Bromwich Albion) became the first player to play a game having been born in this particular year.

1999/2000 – was the last time an Englishman (Kevin Phillips) won the Golden Boot before Harry Kane’s achievement this season.

2011/2012 was the last time a PL debut side survived in their first campaign (Swansea City). AFC Bournemouth achieved it this season.

2669 passes from Cesc Fabregas this season was the highest of any player this season.
