Ozil and Fellaini make top deadline day moves

It was a frantic end to the summer transfer window on Monday, as clubs from the top flight made the final additions to their squads before the 11pm deadline.  Transfer deadline day threw up its usual stories of drama, near misses and long delays before confirmation of some big moves.

The majority of the top powers in the Premier League were in the market for a change, but some like Arsenal and especially the defending champions Manchester United left it until the last minute to conduct any successful business this summer.

The Gunners pulled off the most sensational coup of the day, smashing their transfer record to smithereens in the process.  Arsene Wenger finally listened to the fans and got out the chequebook to bring in world class German international Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid.  Ozil has cost Arsenal around £42.3m, and will wear the number 11 shirt.  The 24-year-old was allowed to leave Madrid as they looked to cash in on a major asset following the world record fee they paid Tottenham for Gareth Bale.  For the record, the north Londoners previous transfer record was Jose Antonio Reyes, who cost Arsenal £17m when he moved to them from Sevilla in January 2004.

Also arriving at the Emirates on Monday was Italian goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano on a loan deal from Serie B club Palermo.  Demba Ba almost joined as well from Chelsea on a similar deal, but the move was called off by Jose Mourinho after the two London giants failed to agree on a suitable loan fee.  It is understood Chelsea wanted £3m from a club to take Ba on loan for the campaign, which also scared off West Ham United and La Liga club Valencia.

Ba stays at Stamford Bridge then, and so does the out-of-favour Juan Mata.  French sources reported the Spaniard had verbally agreed a move to oil-rich PSG but the two clubs couldn't agree on a suitable deal to accommodate everyone's interests.  Leaving Chelsea though were Victor Moses and Romelu Lukaku.  Moses has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge with the arrivals this summer of Andre Schurrle and Willian and will now spend the term on loan at Liverpool.  Lukaku will also be on Merseyside for the 2013-14 season as his representatives thrashed out a late agreement for a similar deal with Everton despite late interest from West Brom.

It was a hectic evening for new Toffees boss Roberto Martinez who added two more players to his squad along with Lukaku.  Gareth Barry has joined on a loan deal from Manchester City to try and boost his flagging World Cup ambitions and the Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy made a late move from Wigan Athletic.  Everton have said the fee they paid to Wigan for McCarthy is £13m, although the Latics say it is £15m.
McCarthy will fill the void left by Marouane Fellaini (pictured).  The story of the Belgian was the one that dominated the evening's entertainment.  Fellaini turned up at the Everton training complex at around 7.30pm to submit a transfer request as the club continued to reject offers from Manchester United.  The Merseysiders had little option but to cash in on one of their prized assets and at just after midnight, official confirmation finally came through of Fellaini's £27m switch to the Premier League champions.  It means he links up with David Moyes again, and he becomes United's fourth most expensive player in the club's history.  Fellaini will not be joined though by Fabio Coentrao after a loan move for the left back fell through at the last minute as Real Madrid could not find an adequate replacement.

Joining Fellaini on the exit trail from Everton is Victor Anichebe.  Out of favour with Martinez, Anichebe made a £5m move to West Brom.  He will be joined at the Hawthorns by Stephane Sessegnon who costs £6m and is Albion's new record signing.  One man who also is staying in the Midlands is Shane Long.  Despite agreeing personal terms and having a medical at Hull City with a view to a £5m move to the KC Stadium, the Baggies pulled the plug on this deal with seconds to spare before 11pm.

Sunderland made two more additions in the Italian market.  Andrea Dossena returns to England from Napoli after being deemed surplus to requirements by Rafa Benitez in Naples.  Dossena had a previous very unhappy season at Liverpool in 2008-09.  Making a temporary switch to Wearside is Fabio Borini, who will spend the season on loan with the Black Cats in an attempt to find form and fitness following a difficult first campaign with the Reds.

Brendan Rodgers did his business early on deadline day.  Along with Moses, Liverpool signed two central defenders for a combined fee of £25m.  Portuguese youngster Tiago Ilori joins from Sporting Lisbon for £8m, and £17m was paid to PSG for one of France's leading central defenders in Mamadou Sakho.  Martin Skrtel also stays and there were no late enquiries for Luis Suarez either making it a very pleasing and successful transfer window for the current Premier League leaders.

Other movers saw Stephen Ireland end his hellish spell with Aston Villa by signing for his old boss Mark Hughes at Stoke City on loan.  Youngster Nick Powell will be on loan to Wigan Athletic for the campaign and Crystal Palace were exceptionally busy on the final day of the window.  Palace tied up permanent deals for defender Adrian Mariappa, midfielders Adlene Guedioura and Barry Bannan and a loan move for unsettled Stoke striker Cameron Jerome.  However Late deals for strikers Nicklas Bendtner and Andy Johnson both collapsed.

The window reopens on January 1, 2014.
