35-year-old Ritchie Humphreys has been confirmed as the new chairman of the PFA.  He will replace Clarke Carlisle in the role and takes up the post in November.

Humphreys first came to prominence in the Premier League with Sheffield Wednesday (video pictured of a brilliant chip against Leicester City in September 1996).  He has since played in the lower leagues at Hartlepool United and is now at Chesterfield, having joined the early League Two pacesetters in the summer.

As quoted in the Daily Mail, he said: “I am honoured to have been elected by my fellow members of the management committee and look forward to taking up the position of PFA chairman at the AGM in November.

“I am fully committed to the role that the PFA plays across all areas of football and will make every effort to continue the great work which Clarke has put in during his time as chairman.”

Carlisle, who ended his playing professional career after being part of the Northampton Town side that lost the League Two play-off final to Bradford City in May, has held the role since 2010.

A previous champion on the Channel 4 quiz show Countdown, Carlisle is expected to be doing more media work with ITV this season, along with spending more time with his family and continue his role as an ambassador for the Kick It Out campaign.

Humphreys (pictured) ended his 12-year stay with Hartlepool in the summer and has helped his new club make a flying start to the new season, powering the Spireites to six clean sheets and top spot in the table by four points.
