New look for a new season

Hello readers

Welcome to Simon's Football Zone - the new name for this website, which used to be called Football Portfolio.  Whilst it still showcases all of my previous published work for football websites I have written for, a new season and new opportunities meant it felt like it was the right time to have a fresh impetus for this website.

As I now hold down a 9-5 job on weekdays, it will be difficult to constantly update the website on a daily basis, but I aim to upload between 5-10 different features per weekend, so you have plenty of fresh content to get you through the working week.

And this website is going to change.  The days of fairly typical and bland news stories will be phased out.  Although there will still be some of these - especially in a big football story such as a top manager losing his job or a massive player transfer, the site is heading down the direction of features and reports.

It won't just be the Barclays Premier League that will be covered too.  There will be regular features from the Football League, stretching through the Championship, League One and League Two.  I will also be focusing on the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, FA Cup, League Cup, Women's Football, Worldwide Football from top leagues such as La Liga and the Bundesliga and Internationals in the build-up to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

All the content written is strictly mine, with the majority of pictures being sourced from content on Google web searches.

A new look also means some new regular features, and here are some exciting new pieces to look out for over the course of the next few months.

My Club - My club is a new monthly feature for the website.  Every month, I will be interviewing one football fan to find out why they support the club they love.  They will range from top English superpowers like Manchester United and Chelsea to lower league outfits if possible.  If you would like to be interviewed to express your love for your club, then send contact details to my e-mail address on the Contact page, or a message through my Twitter account and something can be arranged.

The Media Eye - This isn't what you might think what it is, and I won't be delving into the reports from the national press.  However the media have a strong view in football and dealing with them effectively is a successful part of becoming a top player or manager.  The Media Eye will be a series of biographies of some of the key figures to have played a part in football's evolution on television particularly, but also on the radio.  These will range from commentators and reporters, to the presenters and analysts who keep a show ticking together.

The Computer Chain - Football has become one of the most popular series for computer game addicts and manufacturers.  I will be charting the history of football on computer games, ranging from early franchises on the SEGA systems to today's regular battles on Microsoft and Sony machines.  This series will begin with a celebration of the FIFA series which with the September release of FIFA 14, is celebrating 20 years this year.

Memorable Matches - As Sir Alex Ferguson once said, 'football, bloody hell!'  I will be delving into the archives on a regular basis and selecting some of my favourite matches in the history of football.  I will be spanning it from the early days of Real Madrid's domination of the European Cup in the 1960s to the present day classics we've seen in the Barclays Premier League.  There are plenty of crackers to be enjoyed, so take a trip down memory lane with me.

The Transfer Tavern - If we believe Britain's economy figures, they are steadily improving but football refuses to feel the bite of the recession.  The recent moves of Falcao and Edinson Cavani for over £50m each show some clubs have plenty of muscle to flex in the transfer market.  Every weekend upto the conclusion of the transfer window on August 31, I will be sharing my thoughts on the latest transfer dealings and the top rumours over the course of the week.  This feature will also run throughout the January transfer window.

Reports/Classified Checks - This website will also have some of the latest match reports, covering some of the top games in the Barclays Premier League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and England internationals.  Due to not having access to Sky, most of the reports will come from games televised on either the BBC or ITV.  Every weekend, the plan is also to record a classified check of all of the football results from England and Scotland, along with updates to the league tables.  Also if fans want to write their own match reports for the website, they are more than welcome to do so and they will get full credit for their work too.

So welcome to Simon's Football Zone.  I wish your club the very best in what is going to be an action-packed and hopefully entertaining 12 months of football, culminating with the 2014 World Cup final in the Maracana next July.  And you can follow all the action here on Simon's Football Zone.
