Dave Whelan has confirmed to the Guardian that Wigan Athletic will have a new manager in place by the end of the week.
A shortlist of 50 names has been whittled down to 15 candidates. Whelan (pictured) admits a delay in the compensation package with Everton for ex-manager Roberto Martinez is why the Latics haven’t been able to appoint a replacement yet.
Whelan said: “I’ve been in Jersey for four days and I couldn’t do anything before that because we had to agree compensation with Everton.
"I wouldn’t interview one soul until compensation was agreed. It’s all done now so I am starting interviewing and I’ve got probably 14 to 15 to do this week and I want somebody appointed within the week.”
Favourites are the former England manager Steve McClaren, who has been out of work since February, and the ex-Bolton Wanderers boss Owen Coyle, who achieved promotion through the play-offs with Burnley in 2009.
Recently sacked by Manchester United as assistant manager, Mike Phelan and current Red Devils first team coach Rene Meulensteen are the other names thought to be seriously considered by the Latics.
In the meantime, the FA confirmed Wigan’s appearance in the McDonalds FA Community Shield will be back at Wembley.
The FA Cup winners will play league champions Manchester United in the season curtain-raiser on 11 August, broadcast live on ITV.
