Paolo di Canio has begun to rebuild his Sunderland team at a busy time for the club, ESPN understands.

The club have appointed Roberto De Fanti as the new director of football and Valentino Angeloni will relinquish his role on the staff at Inter Milan to become chief scout of the Black Cats.

Sunderland chief executive Margaret Byrne told the club’s website: “Roberto and Valentino bring with them a wealth of experience; knowledge and football contacts from across Europe and indeed the world and we are delighted to welcome them to Sunderland.

“The recruitment of players is of course key for any football club and Roberto and Valentino will work closely with the head coach and the board to identify targets as we look to strengthen our squad for next season and beyond.”

De Fanti and Angeloni have worked together before at Udinese and then at Inter, so their knowledge of the Italian game is expected to be deep.

The Wearsiders also confirmed De Fanti had been working in an advisory role for some time with the club, and he played a significant role in choosing Di Canio as Martin O’Neill’s replacement as head coach at the start of April.

More new recruits arrived this week with the signings of three new players.  Lazio central defender Modibo Diakite, a former target of Liverpool, joins on a free transfer on July 1.

Also arriving at the Stadium of Light (pictured above) is Maritimo defender Valentin Roberge and midfielder Cabral from FC Basel.
