BBC Sport reports Stuart Pearce is keen to stay on in his position as manager of the England Under-21s.
Pearce was speaking ahead of the Three Lions first match in the European Under-21 Championships this evening, which takes place against a dangerous Italy side with Marco Verratti from PSG and Liverpool’s Fabio Borini awaiting in opposition.
The former left-back (pictured), who earned the nickname ‘Psycho’ in his playing days, would like to continue in a role that has seen him nurture the England juniors since 2007.
He said: “I am absolutely delighted with the job I do. I really enjoy working with young players and have a real passion for it myself, and look forward to sitting down with the FA in two weeks’ time.”
The 51-year-old went straight into coaching after ending his professional career in 2002, and has worked with a squad that includes the likes of Thomas Ince, Wilfried Zaha, Steven Caulker, Danny Rose and the skipper Jordan Henderson.
He guided England to the final of this competition in 2009, before losing the final heavily in Malmo to Germany. Theo Walcott, Micah Richards and Fabrice Muamba were part of that party.
England’s first game in Israel will be at the Bloomfield Stadium in the capital Tel Aviv.
