Newcastle look ready to offer Reading defender Alex Pearce a contract, as Metro says Alan Pardew is beginning to plan for the future.
Newcastle’s defence was breached regularly in the Premier League last season, shipping over 70 goals including seven over two games to Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United.
Pardew sees Pearce (pictured) as the plughole needed to stop this sorry statistic being repeated again next campaign, especially as club captain Fabricio Coloccini looks destined to return to his native Argentina this summer.
James Tomkins has also been linked with a move to Tyneside, but the manager’s hopes of bringing him in have been dashed, as West Ham co-owner David Gold has insisted he is not for sale.
The 24-year-old Pearce has played for the Republic of Ireland at international level and scored on his debut last September in a friendly game with Oman.
He featured 19 times in the Premier League last season, and out of contract next month, he wouldn’t cost Newcastle anything.
His Reading career took in loan spells with Bournemouth, Southampton and Northampton.
