BBC Sport has understood Rene Meulensteen is ready to swap a coaching role at Manchester United for a higher position at the oil-rich Russian club Anzhi.
Meulensteen’s departure from the Red Devils was officially confirmed on Thursday, after many successful years at the club.
The former first team coach (pictured) is the final part of the main managerial team from Sir Alex Ferguson’s era to leave. Last month, goalkeeping coach Eric Steele and Ferguson’s right-hand man Mike Phelan were both sacked.
The 49-year-old, who had a short spell in charge of Brondby in 2006 said: “I’d like to thank Sir Alex Ferguson, the owners, colleagues, players and fans who made my time at Manchester United very special.
“This is football and sometimes these changes have to take place. I hope United go on to experience as much success as I have under David Moyes.”
The Dutchman was in the running for the managerial position at FA Cup winners Wigan, but the job went to ex-Bolton boss Owen Coyle a fortnight ago.
It is expected he will become Guus Hiddink’s assistant manager at Anzhi. Hiddink, who has a wealth of managerial experience with the likes of PSV Eindhoven and Chelsea, has reversed his decision to retire from the game for another 12 months.
