Liverpool skipper targets pre-season recovery

Steven Gerrard has given his club and country a boost by saying he is almost recovered from the shoulder operation that ended his 2012-13 campaign a fortnight before the season’s end.

The 33-year-old played every single minute of Liverpool’s last Premier League campaign until May.  He went under the knife after the goalless Merseyside derby match, meaning he missed the final two games of the domestic campaign and England’s post-season friendlies with the Republic of Ireland and Brazil.

Now, the midfield colossus (pictured) has spoken to the Daily Mirror and is feeling prepared to be back for pre-season following his summer rehabilitation.

On his foundation’s charity golf day in Portugal, Gerrard said: “It’s going well and I’m feeling strong.

“I’m six weeks down the line with the rehabilitation.  I’m not too far away – maybe a couple of weeks away from contact and being back in full training, if everything goes well.  I’m looking forward to it.”

Gerrard, who made his Liverpool first team debut in November 1998, and first represented his country just before Euro 2000, has had several injury setbacks in recent years, most notably two lengthy absences in 2011 due to issues with his groin.

However, he hopes to be ready for Liverpool’s packed pre-season, which includes tours to Australia, Indonesia and Thailand, and England’s next friendly which is against the old enemy from Scotland in mid-August.
