The Daily Mail says Liverpool’s busy summer is set to continue, as Simon Mignolet is on the verge of completing a move to Anfield.

The Belgian stopper has been earmarked as a target by Brendan Rodgers, and is having a medical at the club’s training ground base of Melwood today before completing a move from Sunderland.

The 25-year-old will sign on at Merseyside for a fee of around £9m.  Mignolet (pictured) was regarded by many as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League last season, though he lost out to David de Gea in the battle to get into the PFA Team of the Year.

Mignolet will be Liverpool’s fourth summer capture already.  Over the weekend, deals were completed for Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas and young midfielder Luis Alberto from Sevilla, to add to the experienced addition of Kolo Toure on a free transfer from Manchester City.

Manager Rodgers has insisted though that Mignolet is not a direct replacement for Pepe Reina, despite constant speculation about the future of the Spaniard on Stanley Park.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Rodgers said: “One of the things we’re trying to build is a competitive squad.  Our squad was very thin last year and it was great that we were able to introduce a few young players from our academy, but it’s very important that we have competition in every position and that wasn’t always the case.

“Pepe Reina and I went out for a meal a couple of months before the end of the season and I told him exactly what we were going to do, which was to provide real competition in that area.

“He was fully aware of my intention over the course of the last few months. It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to Pepe.”
