Fernando Torres’ future at Chelsea looks secure, after incoming manager Jose Mourinho admits he wants to work with the striker.
The returning boss to Stamford Bridge will not be looking to repeat his clearout from his first spell in 2004.
Back then, the likes of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Marcel Desailly and Hernan Crespo were shown the door, whilst Adrian Mutu was sacked after failing a drugs test.
However, Mourinho wants to work well with the current squad, and insists Torres is very much part of his plans.
According to Sky Sports, Mourinho said: “Fernando is more than happy to stay and work hard. If the best for all of us is for Fernando to stay, let’s help him and try and get the best out of him.”
Torres (pictured) has more than once come out and said he will honour his contract, despite struggling to settle in after his £50m move from Liverpool in January 2011.
Last season saw some marked improvement though. Chelsea’s faith in Torres was rewarded with a return of 22 goals, although only eight of these came in the Premier League.
He has also won three major honours since arriving in west London, and will contest striking duties with Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku in the upcoming campaign.
