Garay set to complete move to Manchester

Sport News Ireland is saying the highly rated defender Ezequiel Garay is on his way to Manchester United, after a deal was agreed between United and Portuguese league runners-up Benfica.

The 26-year-old central defender was part of the Benfica side that agonisingly lost the UEFA Europa League final to Chelsea last month, Branislav Ivanovic scoring the winning goal in injury time.

In total, he featured 42 times last season.  The Argentine (pictured) started his career with Newell’s Old Boys, but first made his name in La Liga with Racing Santander, and latterly at Real Madrid.

He had been linked with a return to Madrid, but it now looks likely that David Moyes will pounce to make Garay the first signing of a new dawn at Old Trafford.

He has been earmarked as a long-term replacement for Rio Ferdinand, it is claimed.  With Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones all already at the club, incoming boss Moyes will have a number of options in defence.

Should the move be completed, Garay will cost Manchester United £17m.
