Fulham have finally announced the long-awaited capture of Netherlands goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.
The 30-year-old, who is a product of the successful youth system at Ajax, moves to west London after two seasons in Serie A with AS Roma.
ITV Sport understands he has signed a four-year contract and moves to Craven Cottage on an undisclosed transfer.
This move has been in the pipeline for six months. Stekelenburg (pictured) almost joined Fulham on transfer deadline day in January, but after touching down at an airport in London to finalise the move, he was told to go back to Rome after the Italians had a change of heart.
Now, he gets the chance to cement his place in the national setup ahead of next year’s World Cup finals, and the opportunity to work again with Martin Jol.
Stekelenburg told the club’s official website: “It’s good that I’ll be joining Martin again.
“He knows my capabilities very well, so I am just looking forward to joining up with the team in pre-season and enjoying some time with them prior to the new season starting.
“I am very happy to be joining Fulham and to have everything sorted out so early in the summer, so I can really focus on preparations for playing in the Barclays Premier League.”
Stekelenburg has won two Dutch league titles with Ajax, and was twice voted their Player of the Year. He has featured 48 times in the last two years for Roma, and has been capped 54 times by Holland.
