European’s football governing body UEFA has chucked Turkish giants Fenerbahce and Besiktas out of European competition next season over match-fixing allegations.
The Daily Mail reports Fenerbahce (pictured), who made the semi-finals of the Europa League last season, will be banned for three seasons in total, although the third year is a suspended sentence for five years.
Besiktas have been barred from playing in the UEFA Europa League next season, but their ban is for just 12 months. They join Malaga in facing a year on the sidelines; after the Spanish side’s recent appeal against expulsion for financial irregularities was rejected.
A UEFA statement read: “The CDB carefully analysed the situation of both Fenerbahce and Besiktas and has pronounced the following sanctions: Besiktas is not eligible to participate in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League. Fenerbahce is excluded from participating in the next three UEFA club competitions for which it would qualify, including the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League season.”
It is the second time Fenerbahce have been banned for allegations of rigging in football matches. They earned a similar penalty in the 2011-12 campaign. It will cast a doubt on the future of some players, including ex-Liverpool stalwart Dirk Kuyt and former Chelsea midfielder Raul Meireles.
Fenerbahce have insisted they will appeal against the sanction. Romanian side Steaua Bucharest have also been given a suspended one-year ban following a breach of Champions League participation regulations.
