The outgoing FA chairman, David Bernstein, has confirmed to ESPN that the fate of England Under-21 manager Stuart Pearce will be revealed within the next fortnight.
Pearce (pictured) has managed the squad since his departure from Manchester City in 2007, but faces the axe after a diabolical performance in the European Under-21 Championships in Israel.
Defeats to Italy and Norway mean the Three Lions have exited at the group stage for the second successive tournament, as poor tactical choices and lack of player performance ensured England’s potential was never fulfilled.
At an anti-racism event on Monday, Bernstein said: “That was something we always said would be decided after this tournament and that hasn’t changed.
“We will be sitting down as a Club England team in the very near future, I suspect within the next couple of weeks, to make that decision. Overall I have been very impressed with him, absolutely.”
Despite the glowing reference from Bernstein, Pearce’s track record as a manager is patchy. His time as Manchester City boss was frustrating, with the team always looking short of goals, particularly in his final season at the club.
The former Nottingham Forest defender also didn’t get the best out of the Team GB football experiment at last summer’s Olympics, as the men’s team lost out on penalties in the quarter-finals.
Pearce has also served on the senior national team coaching staff. He is out of contract next month.
