Free agent Gary O’Neil isn’t short on offers, and as Metro reports, it is Crystal Palace who lead the race to offer him a contract.

The 30-year-old (pictured) was given the boot by West Ham last week, after refusing to accept a new contract with a lower wage package.

He had struggled with injuries at the Hammers, making just 48 league appearances in two-and-a-half years in east London, although 27 of those did come last season in the Premier League.

Palace’s current midfield is short of experience of playing in the top flight, and the knowledge O’Neil could bring would help in their first campaign back playing Premier League football since 2005.

The former Portsmouth midfielder is also being linked with fellow newcomers Hull City and Championship outfit Brighton. O’Neil though would prefer a move to the south of England, leaving Palace and Brighton favourites to sign him.

Meanwhile, Carlton Cole, who has also been released by West Ham, is being tracked by Nottingham Forest and Charlton Athletic.
