ESPN has reported the Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini looks set to be frustrated again in his attempts to return home to his native homeland.
The Argentine had been hoping for a return to San Lorenzo, but just as in the January transfer window, the deal is on the verge of collapsing.
San Lorenzo had been hoping to sign Coloccini (pictured) on a free transfer, but the Magpies want a transfer fee for their skipper, scuppering San Lorenzo’s hopes.
Argentina’s domestic game is currently struggling financially, and a potential takeover of the club seems to have fallen through.
A club insider told the local Newcastle paper, the Evening Chronicle: “The people who can help us don’t want to invest in Coloccini. They feel that the money could bring in a number of younger players instead.
“That’s how it would be spent. It now looks impossible that Coloccini could play here next season. It looks like the end of the story. Even big clubs like Boca Juniors and River Plate are struggling financially here.”
The 31-year-old first expressed a desire to leave Newcastle in January, but was eventually persuaded to stay by manager Alan Pardew to help with the club’s ultimately successful battle with surprising relegation.
Pardew will meet with Coloccini when he reports back for pre-season training, and will aim again to underline his importance to the playing squad at St. James’ Park.
He currently has three years left on his contract with the Toon Army.
