Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar has claimed Wayne Rooney’s strike for England in their international friendly on Sunday night was a ‘bit lucky.’
According to Sky Sports, the QPR stopper felt Rooney’s attempted shot at goal (pictured) wouldn’t have gone in had it not been for a slight deflection in the 2-2 draw at the Maracana stadium, which will host next year’s World Cup final.
He told Globo Esporte: “Both English goals were beautiful. Rooney’s one deflected in off Fernando’s back, it was a bit lucky. We played well after conceding, but we could improve a lot, especially in the first-half, compared to other games.”
The draw means the Brazilians have only won one of the last eight international matches, and increases the pressure on Luiz Felipe Scolari with the Confederations Cup only a fortnight away.
Despite an underwhelming first-half showing, with Joe Hart having to be on top form to keep the South Americans out, England will be the happier side with the result, and were seven minutes away from victory thanks to goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rooney.
However, they were pegged back by Paulinho’s excellent effort, which ensures no European side has triumphed against Brazil in their home country since England’s last visit in 1984.
