With Roberto Martinez being unveiled today as the new Everton manager, the Daily Telegraph has stated his successor could well be the man he replaced at Wigan, Steve Bruce.
Bruce (pictured) has managed the club twice before, most recently in the 2008-09 season before leaving for his ill-fated stint at Sunderland.
The 52-year-old has just won promotion to the Premier League for the third time with Hull City after two previous successes with Birmingham City.
He also achieved Wigan’s highest top flight finish of 11th, which came in his final season of his second spell.
Whelan claimed earlier this week he had received 50 applications from prospective employers for the vacant post with the FA Cup winners.
The shortlist has been whittled down since, with Owen Coyle, Rene Meulensteen and Karl Robinson also being considered seriously by Whelan.
The owner wants an appointment in place by the end of next week as he wants to get a squad in place for a Championship and Europa League campaign next season.
He said: “We have had a lot of applications. There are some very good candidates among them and with the quality that is there it is going to be difficult. It has got to be sorted out over the next nine of 10 days. We have got to get on.”
