Craig Bellamy has admitted he is unlikely to continue playing for Wales past the end of the current World Cup qualification campaign.
The Independent understands the striker is keen to prolong his club career at Cardiff, and admits his hopes of playing at a major international tournament for his country are over.
He said: “We can’t finish first or second in our group so I want us to finish third. Then that will be it. I don’t think I will have any more to offer. I won’t see a major tournament. I’ve had too many injuries that have taken too big an effect on me.”
Bellamy (pictured) has had a colourful club career, featuring many clubs including Celtic, Manchester City, Newcastle and two separate spells at Liverpool.
His autobiography GoodFella with Daily Mirror journalist Oliver Holt has just been published, which opens up on his public spats down the years with Alan Shearer, Roberto Mancini and Graeme Souness.
Bellamy helped Cardiff back into the top flight last season, and is preparing for another season in the Premier League, now with his hometown club.
He skippered the national side for four years after Ryan Giggs retired in 2007, and has won 73 caps for his country, scoring 19 times.
Bellamy also featured in the Team GB men’s football side that were knocked out in the quarter-finals at London 2012.
