As Wigan Athletic eye up another great escape from the Premier League, the Independent understands top London duo Chelsea and Arsenal are considering a summer move for midfielder James McCarthy.

The Republic of Ireland international (pictured) has been in top form once again for his club this season, and has attracted the attention of some of the Premier League’s heavyweight sides.

Although he is happy in Lancashire, a potential demise into the Championship is likely to spell the end of McCarthy’s four-year stay with the Latics.

Wigan face the biggest fortnight in their history, with a historic FA Cup final appearance on Saturday against Manchester City sandwiched in-between Premier League games with Swansea, Arsenal and Aston Villa.

Victory over the Swans tonight would take Roberto Martinez’s side out of the bottom three.  They currently trail Newcastle by three points, but have a better goal difference.

McCarthy, who made his international debut at just 19 years of age, has an excellent 87.7 per cent pass completion rate in the Premier League this campaign.
