Former Manchester City captain Claudio Reyna has been announced as the new director of football at New York City FC.
ITV Sport reports the deal has been struck as part of the new partnership between City and baseball giants the New York Yankees.
Reyna (pictured), who represented the United States in three separate World Cup final tournaments, and was voted in the FIFA Team of the Tournament in 2002, was a surprise choice for the role.
However, Citizens chief executive Ferran Soriano is convinced he has the right man in place.
Speaking at the club’s launch at the Lexington Academy in Manhattan, he said: “Finding the right person for this role and getting him in place from the start was a priority.
“The football culture of New York City FC will be built from this decision, and we believe Claudio is the man who uniquely understands what New York soccer should mean, and how it can benefit from the relationship with Manchester City FC.”
The former Premier League champions announced their new agreement in the United States on Tuesday, buying a franchise to compete in the MLS from 2015.
39-year-old Reyna began his European adventure as a player with Bayer Leverkusen in 1994, but became familiar to British fans for his spells at Rangers, Sunderland, then for four years at Manchester City, scoring four goals in 87 league appearances.
He finished his playing career Stateside with the New York Red Bulls in 2009.
