After their Champions League qualification near-miss on Sunday, Tottenham coach Andre Villas-Boas is already working on his squad for next season, Metro understands.  The newspaper claims his number one target is the FC Porto midfielder Joao Moutinho, who nearly joined Spurs last summer.

Moutinho (pictured) looked set to head to north London on transfer deadline day last summer, but a deal fell through at the last minute, and the club ultimately beat Liverpool to the cheaper option of Clint Dempsey.

However, the dynamic midfielder, who helped Porto to an unbeaten domestic season and a 27th Portuguese league title at the weekend, is rumoured to finally be about to make the move to White Hart Lane this time around.

Following Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Sunderland, Villas-Boas urged Tottenham owner Daniel Levy to back him in the transfer market, after another frustrating campaign ended with UEFA Europa League football.

The boss said: “We got so close but our rivals will do their job in the window.  We will do our job the Tottenham way - scouting properly, looking for good grabs in the summer to make it a stronger squad.  We have to continue to raise the bar.”

Tottenham only lost to Liverpool and Fulham in the Premier League in 2013, but despite a club Premier League point’s record of 72, fell one point shy of pipping Arsenal to the lucrative prize of Champions League football.
