England recall for Rodwell

Despite a troubled first season with injury at Manchester City, Jack Rodwell has earned a call-up to the England squad for next week’s friendlies with the Republic of Ireland and Brazil.

The Daily Express has revealed Roy Hodgson’s desire to bring Rodwell back into the international set-up, although he wasn’t included in the initial party when the squad for these internationals was first revealed late last week.

Rodwell (pictured) has figured twice for the Three Lions before in his Everton days, but not since November 2011 when Fabio Capello was in charge.  The 22-year-old was the star player for former Premier League champions Manchester City at the weekend, scoring twice in their shock 3-2 home defeat to Norwich City.

There have been no official withdrawals at the moment, but Tom Cleverley is unlikely to feature in either game.  The midfielder was withdrawn during Manchester United’s 5-5 draw at West Brom, but the problem is unclear as Sir Alex Ferguson elected not to speak to any media organisations afterwards.
