The PFA will offer anger management therapy to Liverpool forward Luis Suarez after his latest misdemeanour on the football field.
BBC Sport understands he will be given support by chief executive Gordon Taylor, after the Uruguayan was caught biting the arm of Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with the Blues at Anfield.
The 26-year-old’s actions have been condemned by many football pundits, supporters and the club he represents.
Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has called for Suarez (pictured) to be removed from the PFA Players’ Player of the Year shortlist after the incident.
Taylor said: “We’ve got a lad here who is an extremely good player, one of the world’s best and is letting himself, the club and the game down by his actions.
“While it’s good he made a personal apology we have got to work really hard with him and I hope the club agree on this anger management business to avoid it happening again and setting the worst possible example.”
Suarez apologised in a statement on the Liverpool website on Sunday night, saying: “I am deeply sorry for my inexcusable behaviour earlier today (Sunday) during our match against Chelsea.
“I apologise to my manager, playing colleagues and everyone at Liverpool Football Club for letting them down.”
Suarez has contacted Ivanovic personally, who is believed to have accepted his apology. The club have fined him two weeks wages, with the striker requesting for the money to be donated to the Hillsborough Family Support Group.
However, the club have insisted he will not be sold despite this latest controversy. The FA has since charged Suarez and given him until 6pm tomorrow to respond to the charge.
This is the second time Suarez has been involved in a biting row on the field. He was banned for seven games in Holland for a similar incident in November 2010 during his Ajax days. He didn’t play for the Dutch side again.
