Whilst his strike partner Luis Suarez was making all the wrong headlines against Chelsea, Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge was making his own impact for the right reasons.
The 23-year-old has spoken to LiverpoolFC.com in the wake of Sunday’s 2-2 draw with his former side, in which he made a real difference.
Sturridge (pictured) was left on the bench by Brendan Rodgers, but replaced Philippe Coutinho at half-time and stirred the Reds from a lackadaisical first-half showing.
The England attacker played in Steven Gerrard, only for the captain to be denied by Petr Cech, before striking the woodwork moments later.
Seven minutes into the second-half Sturridge finished off a fluent one-touch move involving Suarez and Stewart Downing for one of the best team goals of the season.
Sturridge said: “I was disappointed not to start because the manager would have known I was a bit angry with Chelsea and wanted to prove a point against them. It was strange playing against them because I only left three months ago so I kind of knew their weaknesses and what their team was all about.
“I was itching to get on and the team performed well in the second half. We started attacking a lot more; in the first half we were a little bit defensive.”
Sturridge could have easily seen red himself for a dangerous challenge on Ryan Bertrand, but continued his influence on the game in stoppage time by providing the killer cross for Suarez to head home with the last action of the match.
