Patrice Evra believes Robin van Persie deserved better treatment from Arsenal fans on his first return to the Emirates Stadium, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The Dutchman returned to north London at the weekend, and almost entered the wrong dressing room on his arrival at the ground, before converting his 25th Premier League goal of the season from the penalty spot.

The 1-1 draw at Arsenal ended Manchester United's hopes of beating Chelsea’s all-time Premier League points record in a single season.

However, Van Persie (pictured) has won his first title, after seven frustrating seasons without any silverware with the Gunners.

However, the majority of home supporters decided to soundly boo their former hero, who found the net 132 times for Arsenal.

Evra said: “People forget what he achieved for Arsenal, but he showed them that he hasn’t made the wrong choice.  It was a long time that he didn’t win the league at Arsenal, but he has come to Manchester United and done it.

“He did a good job for Arsenal and I was really disappointed for him (with the negative reception.) I think he felt it as well.

“To take that penalty, he showed what a world-class, top player he is.  He kept his nerves down to score and I am happy for him.”

The 29-year-old’s spot-kick at the weekend was his second goal against his former employers this campaign after bagging the opener in a 2-1 United win at Old Trafford in November.

Van Persie also overtook Brian McClair’s previous record of scoring more goals than any other player in a debut season for the Red Devils.
