Outspoken West Ham co-owner David Sullivan insists Sunderland have made a mistake in appointing Paolo di Canio as their new manager.
The former Hammers icon has had a testing week, with constant stories about his well-publicised political views ever since his appointment to replace Martin O’Neill was confirmed on Easter Sunday.
In a story reported by Clubcall, Sullivan has added his name to the critics, believing di Canio can never manage at Upton Park because of his views on fascism.
Writing in his column in the Independent, the former Birmingham co-owner said: “Fascism is always intolerable but managers, like owners, have an additional duty to the wider community.
“That is why, despite having once considered him a future manager of West Ham, my partner David Gold and I wouldn’t do so now - unless he renounced his extreme views.”
Di Canio (pictured) finally spoke out in a strong statement on Wednesday afternoon on the Sunderland website, following a press conference 24 hours earlier.
A run of one win in eight matches cost O’Neill his job at the Stadium of Light, and Sunderland sit just one point above the relegation zone, with tricky games against Chelsea, Newcastle, and Tottenham in the run-in.
