Kevin Davies has admitted he is shocked by Bolton’s decision to not offer him a new contract, says BBC Sport.
The Trotters captain turned 36 last week, and extended his current deal last May, despite relegation from the Premier League.
However, the former Chesterfield youngster has been told he won’t get a new deal, or a testimonial, but didn't leave the Reebok Stadium as anticipated on loan before last Thursday’s closure of the Football League loan window for the season.
Davies told talkSPORT: “I’ve had a couple of sit downs with the manager. I’ve been here for so long and you want to get a feel of what’s happening next season, whether it’s here or not.
“They have made that decision today (last Tuesday). It’s surprising to be honest because I’ve been here for so long and its home.
"I thought I’d be at the club until I retired and maybe do coaching afterwards.”
Davies (pictured) once cost Blackburn Rovers £7.5m when he left Southampton in 1998, but failed to make the grade at Ewood Park.
A second spell on the south coast was haunted by regular injuries, and he was picked up by Bolton and Sam Allardyce on a free transfer in 2003.
Since then, he has helped Wanderers to three top 10 Premier League finishes, the League Cup final in 2004 and succeeded Kevin Nolan as skipper in 2009 after his departure to Newcastle.
Davies has scored 84 goals in 407 appearances for Bolton, and won one England cap in 2010.
