Welsh side Cardiff City are prepared to spend big to ensure their stay in the top flight won’t be a brief flirtation.
After several near-misses in recent years, the Bluebirds finally managed promotion to the Premier League on Tuesday night, despite being held to a goalless draw by Charlton Athletic (players celebrating pictured).
Manager Malky Mackay, who achieved promotion from the Championship with West Ham United and Watford as a player, insists plans are already in place.
He told Metro: “It’s a huge challenge. We are going into one of the best leagues in the world.
“We are going to plan properly, that has started already and we will now put that in action. We will make sure the structure we have put in place keeps striding forwards and keeps adding because change is constant.”
Despite club debts of nearly £100m, owner Vincent Tan has backed the 41-year-old in the transfer market, allowing him to bring Frazier Campbell in from Sunderland in January, and Craig Bellamy to make a permanent return to his hometown club last summer.
Cardiff are ready to spend upto £25m in the summer, in a bid to avoid Reading’s fate from this season as the Royals look set for an instant Championship return.
The Championship title could be secured by the on Saturday if they beat mid-table Burnley.
