Tottenham’s Gareth Bale stole the show at the PFA Player of the Year awards on Sunday night.
As confirmed by ITV Sport, the Welsh winger (pictured) scooped the double of Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year. He becomes only the third player in history to achieve the feat, after Andy Gray in 1977 and Cristiano Ronaldo in 2007.
The awards were decided by the professional footballers themselves, and it was something that Bale was taken aback by the most.
He said: “It’s a massive honour. To be voted by your peers is one of the biggest things in the game. It’s great to win it and I am delighted.
“When you look at the list there are some massive names on it and the other nominees have been unbelievable this year, but I couldn’t have done it without the team (at Tottenham).”
Bale also won the main prize back in 2011, and joins Ronaldo, Alan Shearer, Mark Hughes and Thierry Henry as a double winner.
He has scored 24 goals in all competitions for Tottenham this season; the most recent was one of his luckier efforts in Saturday’s 2-2 draw away at Wigan.
He has played in a more central role for the Lilywhites this year, and went on to pick out two of his favourite goals of the campaign.
Bale added: “There are a few goals which I enjoyed. The one against Norwich (in January) was one of my favourites, and the West Ham one (in February).”
The 23-year-old held off stiff competition from Robin van Persie and Luis Suarez to win Player of the Year, while Christian Benteke and Eden Hazard completed the top three in the young player category.
