Long time Hillsborough campaigner Anne Williams, who lost her son Kevin in the 1989 tragedy, lost her fight with cancer on Thursday. She was 62, reports Eurosport.
Williams (pictured) was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer six months ago, but continued to fight for justice for Kevin, who was 15 when he was among 96 Liverpool supporters who were crushed to death on the terraces of Sheffield Wednesday’s ground at the 1989 FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
She had battled against adversity, refusing to pick up Kevin’s death certificate of accidental death, firmly believing he was still alive after the 3.15pm cut-off point initiated in the flawed first inquests in 1991.
Mrs Williams took her battle through the legal system, but the truth finally emerged last September with the publishing of the Hillsborough Independent Panel papers documenting the events that followed the accident.
Her last public appearance was at the memorial service held at Anfield on Monday.
The first stage of new inquests into the disaster begins next week.
