Liverpool’s American owners have elected to raise the ticket prices to watch games at Anfield next season, and this move has angered Reds supporters.
The Spirit of Shankly group has told the Daily Record that the new prices are an “insult to long-standing supporters.”
Season tickets in the famous Kop end of the ground (pictured) will remain at the same price, and a £5 child ticket option for certain matches has been introduced, but a new six-tier system will be introduced as announced by Fenway Sports Group on Friday.
Some areas of Anfield will have prices raised by nine per cent on this season’s fees.
The Spirit of Shankly group feel this is an unnecessary move considering the lack of success of late on Merseyside, with just one major trophy in the cabinet since the FA Cup win in 2006.
They said: “While the announcement regarding Kop season tickets is a relief to many, it is our belief that ticket prices are already too high, pricing out many of those that kept the club on its feet during its darkest day.”
Managing director Ian Ayre has defended the move, telling the club’s official website: “Over the past two years, the club has given careful consideration to ticket prices and pricing structures in consultation with the Supporters Committee.
“Following last year’s price freeze this year we have reviewed our overall stadium pricing structure and, similar to many other Premier League clubs, from next season we will also be introducing a multiple-tier pricing structure which will more accurately reflect seat location and view.”
London clubs Chelsea and Arsenal recently announced a freeze on ticket prices for next season, the latter’s coming after fierce pressure from supporters over a starving of trophy success at the Emirates Stadium.
