The chief executive of the Premier League, Richard Scudamore, has spoken of his desire to not have a winter World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
According to Sky Sports, Scudamore (pictured), who has held his current post since 1999, is reluctant to move around the Premier League calendar to accommodate for the greatest showpiece in world football.
He said: “We have a European calendar, and in England we have an English football calendar which would really not sustain huge disruption.
“Something would have to give in terms of our rich football heritage, FA Cups, League Cups, the way the professional game in this country is organised, (and) it would be hugely difficult to do.
“We don’t want to be playing professional football in June and July. We have other sports in this country and across Europe, we have cricket, we have Wimbledon. We certainly don’t want to be playing football across those other sports.”
Ever since Qatar was chosen as surprising winners ahead of bids from Australia, the United States and Japan for the hosting rights to 2022, in December 2010, there have been concerns over the staging of the traditional summer slot - due to high summer temperatures in the Middle East.
A winter tournament has been speculated and won the backing from some senior football figures including Premier League chairman Sir Dave Richards, UEFA president Michel Platini and FIFA’s head Sepp Blatter.
Blatter has gone on to say he would expect the World Cup to remain in its traditional framework of a June/July date, and might even ask for another round of bidding should Qatar request a date change.
