Nani's ban not extended

Manchester United winger Nani has had his ban for his red card in the Champions League against Real Madrid earlier this month not increased, after a UEFA’s disciplinary review.

The 26-year-old (pictured) was controversially sent off by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir on the hour mark of the second leg tie at Old Trafford for a high challenge on Madrid’s Alvaro Arbeloa.

The Daily Telegraph reported United’s fear that Nani’s automatic one-match ban, which would stand for the dismissal, could have been increased to three at the hearing in Nyon.

There was no representative at the hearing from the Red Devils, but they wrote to UEFA with their evidence, stating conclusively that the challenge on Arbeloa was neither intentional nor dangerous.

Nani played a crucial part in Portugal's fightback from 3-1 down to rescue a 3-3 World Cup qualifier draw away in Israel on Friday lunchtime.

Meanwhile, the Premier League leaders were fined £8,000 for failing to fulfil UEFA’s commitments to the media after the 2-1 defeat 16 days ago.
